In a traditional French meal, the main course takes center stage—it’s hearty and comforting, served after the appetizer and before the cheese and/or dessert!




Whether for everyday cooking or a festive meal, the main course usually consists of meat or fish served with vegetables and starchy sides. In the case of a vegetarian main course, only the latter will be included. The main course is generally the most nourishing and substantial part of the meal.

It should be noted that the concept of a main course is typical of a French menu and must be viewed in context in certain culinary cultures. In a typical Italian meal, the main course is divided into three courses (primo, secondo, contorno). In Asian cultures, the meal typically consists of a selection of dishes served simultaneously.
