I adapted this easy, homemade guacamole recipe from the excellent book Recettes Végétariennes du Monde Entier, Garance Leureux, La Plage, 160 pages. For the record, "guacamole" is a Spanish word derived from the Nahuatl word "ahuacatl-mulli," which literally means "avocado sauce."
Preparation and Ingredients
With this recipe, you’ll learn how to make this famous guacamole yourself. What a treat for you and your guests to be able to avoid the processed, additive-laden versions found in supermarkets! Thanks to the tips I’m sharing here, you’ll see that it’s not complicated at all.
To make this classic homemade guacamole, you’ll just need ripe avocados (see below) and limes. The rest of the ingredients are very standard—garlic, onions, and spices—which you should already have in your pantry.
Nutritional
As you’ll see, this version of guacamole is very healthy, as it contains no added fats. Furthermore, it’s a completely vegetarian and even vegan recipe. It’s also suitable for a gluten-free and lactose-free diet.
How to Choose Ripe Avocados?
When you’re cooking with avocados, you’ve probably realized that it’s not easy to pick ones that are ripe. Either they’re overripe and brown inside, or rock-hard and unusable.
In reality, there’s a very simple method that will save you from squeezing them in every direction and damaging them by pressing too hard!
In fact, all you need to do is gently press on the top of the avocado, right where the small, dry stem used to attach it to the tree. If the avocado feels soft there, it’s ready to eat.
Give it a try!
