Tunisian cuisine is a subtle blend of Berber, Arab, Ottoman, Italian, and French traditions, reflecting a rich history and a cultural crossroads between Africa and the Mediterranean. Spicy, hearty, and full of character, it captivates with its contrasts and bold flavors, where olive oil, spices, and seafood take center stage.

Among the iconic dishes are the famous Tunisian couscous, often prepared with fish or meat and garnished with seasoned vegetables; brik à l’œuf, a thin, crispy fried pastry filled with tuna, egg, and capers; chakchouka, a savory mix of tomatoes, peppers, onions, and eggs; and the unmissable méchouia salad, a cold appetizer made with grilled peppers, tomatoes, onions, and garlic, finely chopped and seasoned with harissa, thyme, and olive oil, sometimes topped with a hard-boiled egg or tuna.




You’ll also find regional specialties like mloukhiya, a thick stew made with molokhia leaves, as well as street food like sandwiches with fricassee or merguez sausage.

There are many key ingredients: harissa (the iconic red chili paste), cilantro, cumin, garlic, tomatoes, bell peppers, capers, lemons, tuna in oil, semolina, olives, and of course a wide variety of fish and seafood, which are abundant along the coast.

Tunisian cuisine is distinguished by its bold taste for spicy dishes, but it also knows how to make room for subtlety, particularly in its pastries made with almonds, honey, and orange blossom water. It embodies a culture of conviviality, generosity, and hospitality, where every dish tells a family or regional story.
