The origins of cornstarch

Cornstarch is made from finely ground corn kernels to produce a white powder. Native to the Americas, the corn plant has been cultivated for thousands of years. The first inhabitants of the American continent, the Native Americans, already used cornstarch to thicken their dishes and culinary preparations.

Cornstarch and nutrition

Cornstarch is naturally gluten-free, making it a perfect choice for people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. It is also low in calories and fat, making it an ideal choice for those following a balanced diet. However, it is important to note that cornstarch is primarily composed of starch, which means it does not contain many nutrients, vitamins, or minerals.

Cornstarch Season

Cornstarch is available year-round in supermarkets. It is not subject to specific harvest or availability seasons, making it a convenient ingredient for everyday cooking.

Storing cornstarch

To keep your cornstarch fresh and of high quality, it is recommended to store it in a cool, dry place, away from heat and moisture. It is best to transfer it to an airtight container to prevent contamination or insect infestation. Under these conditions, cornstarch can be stored for several months without losing its quality.

Culinary uses of cornstarch

Cornstarch is primarily used as a thickening agent in sauces, soups, creams, and desserts. It has the unique property of not forming lumps when mixed with hot liquids, making it a popular choice for thickening sauces and liquid-based preparations.

Cornstarch can also be used in baking to add lightness and smoothness to cake batters, pastry creams, and mousses. It is also perfect for making puddings, flans, and Bavarian creams with a soft, velvety texture.

Finally, cornstarch can be used as an alternative to flour to make foods crispy. It can be used to coat meats, fish, or vegetables before frying, resulting in a light and crispy texture.
