Origins of the Dame-Jeanne demijohn

The "Dame-Jeanne" style demijohn is a glass container used for storing and preserving liquids. This term is primarily used to refer to a cylindrical or globe-shaped demijohn.

This type of demijohn features a wide neck for easy pouring and a cork or similar stopper to ensure a proper seal. Due to its large capacity, the demijohn is almost always encased in a plastic or wicker basket, which is equipped with handles. This basket protects the demijohn and makes it easy to carry.

The etymology of the term “dame-jeanne” is uncertain, but well-documented from a historical and linguistic perspective.

The most widely accepted explanation traces the word back to the 14th century. According to tradition, Queen Jeanne I of Naples took refuge in a glassblower’s workshop during a storm. She is said to have blown a large glass bottle on that occasion. Charmed by its shape, the glassblower reportedly reproduced the object and named it in her honor. This version is likely more legend than historical fact, but it has greatly contributed to immortalizing the name!

From a linguistic perspective, it is interesting to note that the English term “demijohn” refers to exactly the same object. This is no coincidence, as “demijohn” is in fact a phonetic adaptation of “dame-jeanne” in English. The word was imported along with the object itself as early as the 18th century through the wine and spirits trade, and then adapted to fit English pronunciation!

Uses in the Kitchen

The Bonbonne Dame-Jeanne is particularly appreciated for its aesthetic qualities and versatility.

It is especially useful for storing and macerating liquids such as water, fruit juices, oil, or even fermented beverages like kombucha. Its clear glass design makes it easy to see the contents, adding a visual dimension to its use.

The demijohn can also be used to store large quantities of non-perishable items (flour, rice, pasta, sugar, etc.).

In addition to its practical uses, the Marie-Jeanne demijohn often serves as a decorative element in interior design. It is particularly common in stylish kitchens, where it adds a vintage and elegant touch.

The glass material ensures that liquids and foods stay fresh. The bottle is therefore a sustainable solution, as it helps reduce the use of disposable plastic containers.

Models and Materials

1. Clear Glass: The classic clear glass version allows you to see the contents, adding an aesthetic dimension to the kitchen. It is particularly suitable for storing liquids.

2. Colored Glass: Some models are available in colorful shades, adding a vibrant touch to the kitchen. This can be an ideal option for those looking for a distinctive decorative element.

3. Frosted Glass: Frosted glass bottles offer a more contemporary look while retaining the functionality of the classic bottle.

Available Sizes

Marie-Jeanne bottles are available in a range of sizes, suited to various needs.

Sizes generally range from 1 liter to over 10 liters.

Choose based on your intended use, whether for storing liquids, fermentation, or even as a decorative element.

Buying Guide

Consider the following criteria based on your specific needs. This way, you’ll make the right choice when purchasing a “Marie-Jeanne” demijohn.

1. Size: Consider the volume needed based on your intended use. A smaller demijohn is better suited for storing oils or vinegars. Conversely, a larger demijohn is ideal for fermentation or storing large quantities of liquids.

2. Material: Opt for high-quality glass to ensure durability and food safety. Make sure the cork stopper is also of good quality to ensure an optimal seal.

3. Style: Choose a model that complements your kitchen’s style. Whether you prefer classic clear, modern frosted, or a bold color, the variety of styles allows you to personalize your space.

4. Accessories: Some models may come with additional accessories. For example, there are jugs with spouts for easy pouring. Other models feature built-in handles and a protective coating for convenient and safe transport.
